The Boston Red Sox acquired first baseman Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels for cash, as the Angels had designated him for assignment. Noda was sent to Triple-A Worcester, with outfielder Masataka Yoshida moved to the injured list to make room on the Red Sox roster. Seeking help at first base due to an injury, Noda, 29, played previously for the Oakland Athletics and struggled at Triple-A Salt Lake this season with a .148 batting average.
